 Headrests were indispensable items in many African cultures, and are still used today by both pastoralists and settled agriculturists. Their styles vary depending on their origin, and may symbolize status, rank, and gender within the tribe.		  
         
         
    Furniture

 Traditionally, furniture pieces often played a role beyond that of their 'ordinary' utilitarian usage, as we think of them today. Some pieces, such as stools, were highly personal items and associated with status and recognized as objects of prestige.
